A loan helped me to buy better equipment and rental stock to reopen my event company.

Carmen's story

My name is Carmen, I came to the United States more than twenty years ago from Mexico. I came to marry my childhood boyfriend. We reunited after 17 years. We moved to Oakland at that time and have since built our lives in Fruitvale (Oakland)
I am a seamstress by trade and I learned very young from my mother who set up a business in "Nicolás Romero", a small town in the federal district. I learned to sew when I was 12 years old. We sold dresses, pants, all kinds of garments in Mexico. The neighbors brought my mother and me clothes they liked and we emulated the patterns and created new clothes.

When I was in my 20s after my mother passed away, I moved with my daughter to Veracruz, where I taught inmates at the local jail how to fix sewing machines.

Today I feel that I am an entrepreneur, capable of binding clients, taking orders, and deciding the following projects for my business. I have been able to be financially independent and support the education of my children, even my grandchildren.
