A loan helped to buy more dry fish, tomatoes, onions, green pepper.

Specioza's story

Specioza is 21 years old and lives in the town of Ggaba in the Makindye region of Uganda. She has four children, with two of them currently in school. For the past five years, Specioza has been working hard to manage her food stall, which sells dry fish, tomatoes, onions, and green pepper.

To help expand her business, Specioza has requested a loan of 500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more dry fish, tomatoes, onions, and green pepper, and will help Specioza to generate greater profits; then Specioza's business will expand, hence more profits, and she will be able to cater for basic needs at home, thereby improving on their standards of living. Specioza hopes that in the future she will be able to become a strong business woman.

Specioza is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
