A loan helped to buy more products in order to meet customer demands, thereby increasing her profits.

Mercy's story

Mercy is a 24-year-old entrepreneur who lives with her mother and three siblings in the Mulanje district in Malawi. She is responsible for caring for her elderly mother and a school-age sibling.

Mercy runs a small shop where she sells soybeans, maize and pigeon peas. She is requesting a Kiva loan to buy more products in order to meet customer demands, thereby increasing her profits. She plans to use the profit she earns to pay for her sibling’s school fees and provide basic necessities, like food, for her family.

Mercy will repay the "social interest" on her loan by volunteering 2.5 hours per week as a CAMFED Learner Guide, facilitating sessions from CAMFED’s My Better World Program with students at her local secondary school, helping to build children’s self-esteem and motivating them to remain in school. She will also conduct home visits to learners at risk of dropping out of school and connect them with the support they need to stay in school.
