Hawai'i Time Farm has been a dream of mine since growing up on a trout ranch. Becoming a teacher became my priority when my community of Honoka'a, Hawai'i was unable to fill their middle school science classroom with a licensed professional. During that time I was farming kalo (taro) in the loi (growing ponds) of Waipi'o Valley where I still help produce and sell the culturally sacred plant and early capital of Hawai'i for many Ali'i (chiefs/kings). Once schools across the nation closed due to COVID-19, I responded by getting my farm business officially started. Upon the slope of Mauna Kea, I hope to hire a farm manager to overlook a productive CSA business while I teach fulltime and grow oyster mushrooms which I have experience growing.
What is the purpose of this loan?
This loan will help upgrade the off-grid farmhouse to be capable of supporting an oyster mushroom growing to increase revenue. I would also use the funds to help clear out the invasive running bamboo and put it in an electric fence. This fence would help me bring over the farm's heard of milking goats from my neighbor's property to my own. These goats will eat any of the running bamboo shoots that try to come back.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
