A loan helped to buy more maize and beans.

Sarah's story

Sarah is 23 years old and lives in the town of Mityana in the Kiyinda region of Uganda. She is married and has 2 children; one of them currently in school. For the past 2 years Sarah has been working hard to manage her food business, which sells maize, beans and coffee.

To help expand her business, Sarah has requested a loan of 700,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more maize and beans, and will help Sarah to generate greater profits. Sarah will use the profits from the business to assist her husband in paying school fees for their children, buying for herself personal items like clothes, paying house bills and providing basic needs for the family like food, thereby improving their standards of living. Sarah hopes that in the future she will be able to start rearing poultry in order to generate more income.

Sarah is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
