A loan helped to purchase more clothes.

Shaluwa's story

Shaluwa is 18 years old and lives in the town of Makindye in the Makindye region of Uganda. For the past three years, she has been working hard to manage her clothing business, where she sells dresses, skirts and tops.

To help expand her business, Shaluwa has requested a loan of 1,100,000 Ugandan shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more clothes, and will help Shaluwa to generate greater profits. Using the profits of the business, she will be able to pay school fees for her siblings, buy personal items like sanitary towels and clothes for herself, pay house bills and provide basic needs for the family like food, thereby improving their standard of living. Shaluwa hopes that in the future she will be able to open up a clothing store in order to generate more income.

Shaluwa is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
