Faka'anaua's story

Faka'anaua is a 36 year old mother, from the island of 'Eua. Her husband is a farmer, and they have five children. Together they are running a business of handicraft and growing crops.

With her handicraft business she makes different styles of kiekie from hibiscus and coconut fiber. She is self-employed and her husband only helps her with the braiding of the materials. Faka'anaua sells out her kiekie mostly at the local market where she is marketing their crops.

Also sometimes random people just came into their house and buy kiekie from there. For their plantation, her husband takes care of it, while Faka'anaua does the marketing of the harvested ones.

In their plantation, they grow taro, sweet potatoes, cassava and also yams of different kinds. Her business is growing, and she needs helps with it. She is applying for a loan in order to buy raw materials for her handicraft and also hire more men to help her husband with their plantation, for they are planning on planting another acre of kava (Tongan beer).

Her vision for the future is for her children to finish their education and live a better life.
