A loan helped to buy cereals (lentils, cowpeas, rice, and sorghum) to sell to her customers and earn extra income to support her children who are at school.

Kambua's story

Kambua loves her family more than anything and this explains why she has always worked very hard to support them. She moves from pillar to post to ensure that her six children continue to progress. She is a smallholder farmer from the Kitui area of Kenya and commands a lot of respect. Kambua is the breadwinner for her family. She is motivated to work hard so that her children will have a bright future and her aging parents will have a comfortable life. Although she makes a profit from farming, she is not comfortable and has always wanted to increase her income by selling cereals. That is why she is seeking this loan: to buy cereals. Her remote area, one of the country's most populated regions, has a high demand for cereals. This means that Kambua could increase her profits by satisfying the local demand.

Unlike most microfinance institutions in Kenya that have imposed very complicated procedures in funds acquisition thereby discouraging smallholder farmers, Juhudi Kilimo is working closely with Kiva to make loan acquisition for a smallholder farmer easy and convenient. Through this intervention, movement of funds in the rural communities has increased, thereby alleviating rural poverty. Kambua wants to use the profits to educate her children. Kambua feels inspired to continue farming and motivated to improve her life now that she is a member of Juhudi Kilimo.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
