Aura, a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres de Maxan” group, is 36 years old, married, and has two years of formal education. Aura says, “I have been raising chickens for seven years and the income has helped our family progress. I help my husband with household expenses and the education of our four children.” One year ago, she also started selling firewood. She is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy more chickens and firewood.
There are eight enthusiastic ladies in this Trust Bank group who have traditional food businesses, raise animals, and sell firewood. They live in a rural area in the state of Suchitepequez. They gather monthly to make loan payments and to participate in educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and health care services. They learn how to manage their businesses best, care for their families, and empower themselves as women and entrepreneurs. Every other month, the women have access to basic health care services like blood, PAP smears, and family planning.
