K. Jane, shown at the bottom left in a small photo, is the leader of her lending group and is also shown in the group photo. The 55-year-old is a married woman with two children. Her children, plus the four orphans under her care, all attend school.
To cater for her children, Jane has for the last twelve years been selling local brew and agricultural produce in Namayuba village in Mukono district.
In her bid to provide a reliable source of livelihood to her family, Jane has had to come to terms with the hidden pitfalls that befall such businesses at unpredictable times. She, like many other customers of farm produce, found herself at the receiving end of the adverse weather spells which, for the most part, destroyed crops. This affected her suppliers, the farmers.
Local brew was soon outlawed too. That law was rescinded and currently she makes close to 200,000 shillings a week from her businesses. Her plan, after obtaining this loan, is to fully restock her business with more local gin and more produce to sell.
