A loan helped to purchase a fridge for cooling drinks.

Shamimu's story

Shamimu is 19 years old and lives in the town of Kaliro in the Iganga region of Uganda. For the past one year, Shamimu has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells sugar, salt, water, juice, sodas, eggs and bread.

To help expand her business, Shamimu has requested a loan of 900,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase a fridge for cooling drinks, and will help Shamimu to generate greater profits. Using the profits of the business, Shamimu will be able to buy for herself personal items like clothes and sanitary towels, pay house bills and provide basic needs for the family, thereby improving on their standards of living. Shamimu hopes that in the future she will be able to open up a wholesale shop in order to generate more income.

Shamimu is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
