A loan helped to buy braids, hair oil, and weaves.

Moureen's story

Moureen is 24 years old and lives in the town of Mityana in the Kiyinda region of Uganda. She has one child who is currently in school. For the past five years, Moureen has been working hard to manage her beauty salon, where she plaits hair, braids, weaves, and does treatment and retouch.

To help expand her business, Moureen has requested a loan of 1,800,000 Ugandan shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy braids, hair oil, weaves, and will help Moureen to generate greater profits. Moureen will realize more profits from the expanded business, and she will be in position to cater for her basic needs at home and pay school fees for her child, thereby improving their standard of living. Moureen hopes that in the future she will be able to buy land and build a house.

Moureen is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
