A loan helped to buy farm inputs, such as fertilizer and certified seeds, to enable her to grow more crops.

Esther's story

Wonderful Kiva lenders, meet Esther (33 years old), a practical and resourceful woman. She has no higher education or work experience, only her wits and her desire to succeed in life. She is a very hardworking, progressive, and honest farmer from a remote village in the Nyahururu area of Kenya. This area is very fertile with favorable weather patterns that support farming activities.

Esther has a farm where she grows crops and raises sheep and different livestock. She also earns some income from a personal business, though she never had a formal education.

The Nyahururu area is a favorable one for farming, so Esther is seeking a 65,000 KES loan through Kiva's field partner Juhudi Kilimo. She will use it to buy farm inputs, such as fertilizer and certified seeds, to enable her to grow more crops, reap maximum profits, and increase her business.

Being a woman and accessing funds in Kenya, especially around Nyahururu, is very challenging. Esther feels relieved knowing there are institutions such as Kiva and the wonderful lenders that help hardworking women like her. She is always working to improve her family’s living conditions, but her biggest dreams are to become independent and support her parents and children by herself.

Esther is so thankful to lenders in advance.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
