Farida's story

Farida is 23 years old and lives in the town of Mbarara in the Mbarara region of Uganda. She has 2 children, 1 of whom is currently in school. For the past 3 years, Farida has been working hard to manage her business, which sells sugar, salt, soap, rice, maize flour.

To help expand her business, Farida has requested a loan of 2000000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more sugar, maize flour, salt, and rice, and will help Farida to generate greater profits,

Farida will be able realize more profits from the expanded business. She will be able to cater for her family and children, hence improving on their standard of living. Farida hopes that in the future she will be able to open up a supermarket.

Farida is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
