A loan helped to buy a frying pan and cooking oil.

Sumini's story

Sumini is 21 years old and lives in the town of Bulenga in the Kiyinda region of Uganda. She is married and has 3 children, all of whom are currently in school. For the past 2 years, Sumini has been working hard to manage her catering business, which sells fast foods like chapati, samosas, pancakes, and cassava.

To help expand her business, Sumini has requested a loan of 1,500,000 UGX from BRAC Uganda. This loan will be used to buy a frying pan and cooking oil, and will help Sumini to generate greater profits. With these increased profits from the expanded business, Sumini will be able to cater to the needs of her family and children, hence she will be in a position to improve on her standards of living. Sumini hopes that in the future she will be able to purchase a stall in a market.

Sumini is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
