A loan helped to buy rice, maize flour, soap, cooking oil, salt and sugar.

Jamawa's story

Jamawa is 23 years old and lives in the town of Namutumba in the Iganga region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past six years, Jamawa has been working hard to manage her retail business, which sells sodas, beans, rice, pens, pencils, books, spices, biscuits, cooking oil and sugar.

To help expand her business, Jamawa has requested a loan of 1,900,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy rice, maize flour, soap, cooking oil, salt and sugar, and will help Jamawa to generate greater profits. Jamawa will use the profits of her business to pay school fees for her child, pay rent and provide basic needs for her family like food and medical care, thereby improving their standards of living.

Jamawa hopes that in the future she will be able to open up a restaurant in order to generate more income.

Jamawa is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
