A loan helped to purchase farm inputs such as fertilizer to help improve her tea farm.

Mourine's story

Hello, lenders! The above picture presents Mourine, a mother of four children pictured with one of them who has been practicing agriculture for the last few years. Because of the immense knowledge she has about farming, she commands a lot of respect among other farmers, and is viewed as a mentor in her village.

Mourine lives with her children in the Kericho area of Kenya, which is known for tea and maize farming. Her primary income sources are the sale of tea and corn and some personal business she engages in to supplement her meager income.

Generating an income by selling her tea harvest is the part of farming she enjoys most, while availability of labour is a major challenge for her.

Before joining Juhudi Kilimo, Mourine could not access loans from banks because she is a woman and also a smallholder farmer. She joined Juhudi Kilimo and learned about loan management and agribusiness. She also got to learn about Kiva and the wonderful Kiva lenders.

Mourine is seeking a loan to purchase farm inputs such as fertilizers to help improve her tea farm. With this loan she will be able to sell her tea to tea factories. This will boost her income and enable her to pay school fees for her children.

Mourine waits for your kindness.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals and farming equipment.
