A loan helped to purchase more sacks of sugar, salt and maize flour.

Shamim's story

Shamim is 18 years old and lives in the town of Namutumba in the Iganga region of Uganda. For the past three years, Shamim has been working hard to manage her retail shop, where she sells essential items like sugar, salt, cooking oil, and water.

To help expand her business, Shamim has requested a loan of 1,200,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more sacks of sugar, salt and maize flour for sale, and will help Shamim to generate greater profits and pay back the loan on time. She will buy food, pay household bills, and provide other basic needs for her family.

Shamim hopes that in the future, she will be able to buy a plot of land, build rentals, and also own a supermarket.

Shamim is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
