A loan helped to buy Irish potatoes and cooking oil.

Swabulah's story

Swabulah is 23 years old and lives in the town of Mbarara, in the Mbarara region of Uganda.

For the past 2 years, Swabulah has been working hard to manage her food production business, which sells fried Irish potatoes.

To help expand her business, Swabulah requested a loan of UGX 500,000 from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy Irish potatoes and cooking oil, and will help Swabulah to generate greater profits. Therefore, Swabulah will be in position to afford more basic needs and provide for her family's basic needs, hence improving their standard of living.

Swabulah hopes that, in the future, she will be able to add more stock to her business, like snacks.

Swabulah is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
