A loan helped to buy some resources and materials for her handicraft business.

Melane's story

Melane is 44 and a married woman with ten children. Four of her children currently attend school and six are not in school. The family of twelve lives together in their own house.

Her husband works as a farmer on their plantation while Melane runs her other business, a handicraft business. Melane has expanded her business into two businesses. She had a loan from SPBD and used it as capital for both her plantation and her handicraft businesses.

The plantation grows taro, cassava and yams. It is located in her village. At harvest time, they sell their crops and Melane's handicrafts at the market. They use their earnings to support the family, especially for her children's needs and her loan repayments.

She faced challenges after Cyclone Gita struck Tonga in February last year and caused her business to stop because coconut trees were affected. This is where she gets most of her materials for her handicrafts. Her vision for the future is to educate her children and to build a bigger house for her family.
