A loan helped to purchase more cabbages, onions and passion fruits.

Mackline's story

Mackline is 20 years old and lives in the town of Mbarara in the Mbarara region of Uganda. She is married and has one child, who is currently in school. For the past three years, Mackline has been working hard to manage her food stall, which sells cabbages, onions and passion fruits.

To help expand her business, Mackline has requested a loan of 1,200,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more cabbages, onions and passion fruits and will help Mackline to generate greater profits. Mackline will use the profits of the business to assist her husband in paying school fees for their child, providing necessities like clothes, paying household bills and providing basic needs for her family like food, thereby improving their standard of living.

Mackline hopes that in the future, she will be able to open a big grocery store in order to generate more profits. Mackline is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
