A loan helped a member to buy more sugar, soap and cooking oil.

Hatima's Group's story

Hatima's group is comprised of six hardworking women. Hatima is 20 years old and lives in the town of Kaliro in the Iganga region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past 2 years, Hatima has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells cooking oil, soap, sugar, salt and maize flour.

To help expand her business, Hatima has requested a share of 1,700,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more sugar, soap and cooking oil, and will help Hatima to generate greater profits. The profits from the business will enable Hatima to take care of her child, pay household bills like electricity, buy necessities like soap and provide basic needs for her family like food, thereby improving on their standards of living. Hatima hopes that in the future she will be able to build a bigger permanent house.

Hatima is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

In this group: Hatima, Gloria, Janet, Amina, Azeda, Fatina
