A loan helped to buy green bananas and sweet potatoes.


Jovia's story

Jovia is 19 years old and lives in the town of Mubende in the Kisekende region of Uganda. She has one child. For the past 1 year, Jovia has been working hard to manage her food stall which sells fresh food, green bananas, sweet potatoes, and yellow bananas.

To help expand her business, Jovia has requested a loan of 700,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy green bananas and sweet potatoes, and will help Jovia to generate greater profits and Jovia will be able realise more profits. Therefore, she will be in a position to cater for her family's needs hence improving on their standard of living. Jovia hopes that in the future she will be able to open up a retail shop.

Jovia is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
