A loan helped to buy tomatoes and onions.

Jackie's story

Jackie is 22 years old and lives in the town of Seeta in the Kireka region of Uganda. She is married and has one child who is currently in school.

For the past four years, Jackie has been working hard to manage her food stall in which she sells tomatoes, onions, green pepper, and curry powder.

To help expand her business, Jackie has requested a loan of 1,500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy tomatoes and onions and will help Jackie to generate greater profits. Jackie will be able to increase her profits; therefore, she will be able to provide for her child, hence improving their standard of living. Jackie hopes that in the future she will be able to construct a residential house.

Jackie is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to micro finance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
