A loan helped to buy more sugar, maize flour, salt and soap.

Shaluwah's story

Shaluwah is 17 years old and lives in the town of Lukaya in the Masaka region of Uganda. For the past 2 years, Shaluwah has been working hard to manage her retail business which sells maize flour, sugar, cooking oil, soap and salt.

To help expand her business, Shaluwah has requested a loan of 500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more sugar, maize flour, salt and soap, and will help Shaluwah to generate greater profits. When Shaluwah realises more profits, she will be able to cater for her family needs, hence improving on their standards of living.

Shaluwah hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land.

Shaluwah is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
