A loan helped to purchase Irish potatoes and green bananas.


Sumayiya's story

Sumayiya is 21 years old and lives in the town of Bombo in the Luwero region of Uganda. She has one child. For the past 3 years, Sumayiya has been working hard to manage her food stall, which sells Irish potatoes and green bananas.

To help expand her business, Sumayiya has requested a loan of 1,500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase Irish potatoes and green bananas, and will help Sumayiya to generate greater profits. Sumayiya's business will expand hence more profits, and she will be able to support her child thereby improving on their standards of living. Sumayiya hopes that in the future she will be able to go on a hairdressing course and acquire more skills.

Sumayiya is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
