A loan helped to purchase more tomatoes, cabbages and eggplants.


Shamimu's story

Shamimu is 23 years old and lives in the town of Iganga in the Iganga region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past three years, Shamimu has been working hard to manage her grocery store, which sells tomatoes, eggplants, cabbages and onions.

To help expand her business, Shamimu has requested a loan of 900,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more tomatoes, cabbages and eggplants, and will help Shamimu to generate greater profits, which will result in an increase in income. This will enable Shamimu to provide for the basic needs of her family and complete the construction of her mother's house, thereby improving on their standards of living.

Shamimu hopes that in the future, she will be able to to buy a motorcycle that she will use to generate more income.

Shamimu is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.
