A loan helped to buy materials for repairing her home, which was damaged by the cyclone.

Hatasou's story

Hatasou is 53 years old. She's a widow and has five children. Only one of her children is still attending school.

Hatasou is currently running her business of making tapas (a patterned cloth made from the bark of the mulberry tree) and she operates her business in her own village together with the help of other women in the neighborhood. She used to earn an income monthly from her mats and ta'ovala (woven clothing) that she sells.

Last February, Tonga was struck by a very strong cyclone named Gita, which affected most Tongans' lives. Hatasou's business wasn't affected, but her house was badly damaged. Half of the roof was blown off and most of the louvers were broken. She has applied for a rehabilitation loan to help her with repairing her home.

In the future, she's planning to carry on with running her business and urging more women to have the courage to run their own businesses in order to help their families.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
