A loan helped to stock more varieties of sweets.


Mary Gorret's story

Mary Gorret is 20 years old and lives in the town of Kibuli in the Makindye region of Uganda. She is single and has two children. For the past two years, Mary Gorret has been working hard to manage her sweets shop, which sells chocolates, lollipops, and other sweets.

To help expand her business, Mary Gorret has requested a loan of 800,000 Ugandan Shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to stock more varieties of sweets. This will help Mary Gorret to generate greater profits, and higher profits from the expanded business will enable her to afford basic needs of life, improve her standards of living, and support her children as well. Mary Gorret hopes that in the future, she will be able to to buy a plot of land and build rentals.

Mary Gorret is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
