A loan helped to buy more cooking oil and charcoal for the stove of her restaurant.


Safina's story

Safina is 20 years old and lives in the town of Seeta in the region of Uganda. She is married and has 2 children with 1 currently in school. For the past 2 years, Safina has been working hard to manage her restaurant, which sells cooked food.

To help expand her business, Safina has requested a loan of 1,200,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more cooking oil and charcoal for the stove.

The loan will help Safina to generate greater profits and as her business expands, profits will increase. Safina will then be in a position to improve her standards of living, take care of her children and also pay the respective school dues in the short run.

Safina hopes that in the future she will be able to to expand her restaurant to a mini hotel.

Safina is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
