Amanda's story

I grew up never eating vegetables (dissecting dishes to find teeny pieces of onion was my favorite way to torture my parents). But, in college I was taught the connection between what we eat and the world around us and it changed my life. I went on to get a degree in Food Studies and used it to start an Edible Schoolyard program at the school where I worked. I am now overseeing that program and training others to teach there! When I started the school garden, I was an ardent veggie grower that saw flowers as slightly frivolous and not very important in the grand scheme of things. When I decided to use my space to grow herbs, edible flowers, and cut flowers, my mind (and heart) quickly changed. Now, it's all flowers all the time. The amount of life in my front yard has absolutely exploded. So much so that it is now a Certified Wildlife Habitat! School groups, neighbors, and strangers have stopped and taken it in, helping me see the garden again through fresh eyes. I'm able to run a business that helps our very local environment, inspire and rejuvenate the spirits of the people around me, and hang out with bees all the time! With a lot of really hard work, love, and support from others (and a Kiva loan!) Hummingbird Gardens is now winding down from our second season! I can't believe this is my job.
