Rachel's story

While studying fine arts as an undergrad, I became interested in holistic wellness. Living in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts introduced me to a lifestyle that included getting my food from local organic farms and learning about yoga and meditation. After college, I felt inspired to attend massage therapy school. Becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist opened up a career path that turned out to be my true calling. Working in service, while helping other to feel better in their bodies, led to a deeper interest in the mind/body connection, and I later completed a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Dance/Movement Therapy. Combining body-based knowledge with expressive arts psychotherapy turned out to be an ideal match for working with young children with Autism. Though I loved this work, I found myself to finally be experiencing typical burnout symptoms which often accompany a career in human service. I knew that I could no longer provide the level of care that the job required of me, and so I decided to return to my roots as a creative maker.

PonyBabe, an ethically manufactured and eco-friendly clothing line, is a project that lets me combine my background in the arts with my love of helping people. Now, instead of treating clients therapeutically in order to help them heal and feel at peace in their bodies, I offer women clothing that allows for freedom of movement and confidence in appearance. Though I'm not working as a therapist, I still wish to contribute to a society in which my actions support others in thriving. Producing fair fashion helps me to continue living my values, without burning out. In the future, once PonyBabe is stable, I hope to once again work as a therapist in part time private practice.
