Alma's story

My name is Alma and I grew up ciudad Hidalgo in Michoacan, Mexico in the center of the country. My parents emigrated to the United States when I was 6 years old and my parents left one of my brothers and I in Mexico for ten years with my grandparents until they could afford to send for us. Life was very hard, I shared one bedroom with my brother and my four uncles. Some days we had food, other days we went with out. When my Mom came back for me when I was 15 I found out I had four new siblings, two brothers and two half-sisters.

I immigrated to the United States at 15 and we left my brother behind because we could only afford to pay for one of us to come to the United States. I came to Redwood City with my Mom and started working after school to support the family. It was a struggle emotionally for me to adapt to a new culture and I missed my brother terribly. The money I made after school I sent home to my brother and my grandparents.

After a couple of years I met my husband Roberto and together we saved enough money by the time I was 18 to send for my brother to come live with us. Roberto and I saved some additional money and moved to Chicago to start a business that failed after a few months due to the 911 catastrophe. While supporting my husbands business I started my photography business and we moved to Oakland the following year in 2002.
