These are teachers of the Wellington Muslim Ass. Primary School, Waterloo. This school was set up in 2001 by Wellington Muslim Association and the Lumpa community people. The school has a total of nine staff and 650 pupils.
SMT in partnership with Shine on Sierra Leone gives out loans to teachers and other monthly wage earners to help them invest in something meaningful since their meager salaries cannot let them do so. Some of these teachers use such loans to invest in business, in order to complete their monthly salaries; or they invest in their wives’ businesses. Some use such loans to pay school fees for their children or for themselves, to pursue further studies. From their monthly salaries, the school’s bursar repays SMT on their behalf.
Abu K. (second from left) is a teacher and head of games and sports at the school. Abu is aged twenty-seven, single with one child. He was born in Joe Town about twenty-six miles from Freetown. Abu has been a teacher for three years now. With this loan, he will invest in business.
