Omotayo's story

I was born in London, then from the ages of 4-14, grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. When I first arived in Lagos, I lived with my grandmother in the family home on Tinubu Square. Looking out on Tinubu Square in the 70's might be compared to viewing Trafalger Square; as a child the sight was pure inspiration! I looked out on that square, and would fantasize and plan on what I would wear to meet that energy-- These are some of my earliest memories.

I would return to London as a teen, and diligently worked through the academic courses my father chose for me. In afternoons that I had free, my release would be to make clothes for myself, and finally, a teacher recognized that though I was a shy and quiet student, my original attire was anything but! And that teacher suggested to me something unthinkable-- that I might persue a career as an artist, as a designer.

I would go on to attend the London College of Fashion, and as a young adult began to express my other great love, which was my love for music and to dance! Through dance, and dancing in the London Club Scene, I was soon brought on as the dancer for the phenomenon known as Soul to Soul! I contributed to creating their look, which become iconic of the time. Work with Soul 2 Soul brought me to New York-- and here I am 20 years later!

My life as a performer and designer would continue to grow. I have had the extraordinary opportunity to design costumes for some of the greatest contemporary dance companies. I have toured the world as a musician and dancer. And I have been able to produce and grow a clothing line on my terms, reflective of my ethics and values. My artistic and entrepreneurial persuits have always come from a place of love-- I truly love what I do-- Wow Wow came out of many years of designing clothes for myself that my friends and fellow dancers would insist I reproduce for them-- eventually I decided it made sense to explore offerring a ready to wear line, and from its earliest inception, much to my delight, people have been loving the clothes.

Much of my inspiration for the line comes from that wonderous gaze onto Tinubu Square, and almost all of the clothes are made of artisan dyed fabrics in the West African batik tradition of Adire--

The annual journey home to West Africa to produce the line gives me life, and I love to express and share this in the form of Wow Wow by Wunmi -- to bring this energy back to people in the diaspora, is a great joy. Equally gratifying is bringing work to the handful of artisans who help me to realize this dream, and in having the opportunity to honor the tradtional craft of Adire through my designs.
