Mateboho is the 37 year-old married mother of 4 children and grandmother of 4. She lives in a family of 5 in a 1 roomed brick house and 1 separated hut. She earns a living as a primary school teacher.
She walks long distances to collect firewood and buy paraffin. Lesotho highlands temperatures are hardly high. Winters get very cold and often Mateboho has to start fire in her hut, which releases smog and smoke which when inhaled in large quantities over a period of time, can lead to lung diseases, eye problems and even, death. Life for people like Mateboho is very difficult.
She has requested a loan from Kiva lenders to be able to purchase the ACE1 cook stove, which will provide her and 11 other people from her village, living in similar circumstances, the chance of cooking in a way that does not harm them and their families and that does not require expensive paraffin and gas or a lot of wood. This stove is smokeless, making it safe to be used inside the home and can be started with very little readily-available biomass. For more stove info, please check www.africancleanenergy.com
