Atava's story

I was born in Detroit, Michigan into a multi-cultural family (Polish/Mexican/Hungarian/Navajo), but have lived most of my life in California. After graduating from Stanford, my quest to find my true calling led me to study holistic healing. I first was certified in acupressure and soon thereafter fell in love with herbs and became a dedicated student and practitioner of herbal medicine. My longing to learn more about the healing traditions of my own ancestors led me to study curanderismo, the folk healing tradition of Mexico. This desire to connect with ancestral medicine also guided me to the Indigenous Mind Program at Naropa University, where I received my master’s degree studying the healing traditions of my Polish ancestors.

I have been living in Oakland, California for over 25 years. Oakland is a vibrant and diverse city known to be a hotbed of culture and social activism. As an herbalist, I have been an active part of creating free clinics in the Bay Area, where we have reached many underserved populations with services such as herbal medicine, massage and acupuncture. I am committed to making natural healing accessible to all people and am proud to be part of this healing movement.

I have been blessed to have had many great teachers in my life, who have supported my own path as a healer. My dream is to share what I have learned and to keep these teachings and indigenous traditions of our ancestors alive. My dream is manifesting today in the form of my school which I have dedicated to the study and practice of herbal, folk and indigenous medicine.

In my free time I love spending time in my garden and growing herbs and flowers or curling up with a good book with one of my cats on my lap.
