Karl's story

I got into retail by accident, but I've always been in the bike business. I was a messenger in the 80s, then helped found the SF Bicycle Coalition in 1991, and created and managed their valet bicycle parking program. In 2007 I developed and ran a bike parking facility at a local transit hub. To cover costs, the facility also operated a bike shop profitably. This year I opened the current shop, which is over four times the original's size.

Along the way, I raised two children car free. If the technology had been available then, life would have been so much easier.

My greatest accomplishment has been to transition from activist to business owner. I taught myself double entry accounting and learned retail business practices.

When I started riding, bicycle commuting was a fringe activity. Now, when I stand in front of my shop and watch the bike commuters streaming by, it's gratifying to remember, and imagine a future where everyone feels safe riding to work.
