Lyla's story

My name is Lyla Nelson and I am an artist. The daughter of a printer and an amateur photographer, I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Bright colors and tropical flowers had a strong presence in my life as a child. Our next-door neighbor was a watercolorist who would paint in the yard, and I would join her with my plastic Play-Skool easel. This was the beginning of my life long love affair with art.

We relocated to Georgia where I spent most of my teen years, and it was there I discovered ceramics. At 18, I moved to attend school at University of Pittsburgh for their medical program. Silly me. I’m an artist, not a doctor. The more this realization came to light, the more I began to pursue creating art as a conscious choice for a career.

In Pittsburgh I discovered glass. It captivates me and simultaneously challenges me in ways no other medium has. After learning at the Pittsburgh Glass Center for a year, I chose to find an undergrad program for art. A school in Tennessee, the Appalachian Center for Craft, was just the program I was looking for, and I spent 5 years there learning glass-working techniques. I also dabbled in small metals, blacksmithing, fiber art, and once again clay.

I have returned to Pittsburgh because I love it here and because there is a public access facility I can rent to create work. After acquiring my own studio space I have been slowly building the tools to run a glass etching business and simultaneously be able to create my signature work to be sold in galleries. Once operational, I would like to open to the public and teach workshops using recycled glass and etching techniques.
