Kate's story

When my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Norris, asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up I answered that I wanted to be an artist. I’ve always loved to draw. I graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2001 and soon thereafter made my way to Portland. I’ve been a practicing artist since that time and have supported myself through a variety of part time jobs in the arts, retail, and childcare. I currently work part-time selling children’s books at Powell’s Books.

In the first few years after I graduated from art school I made landscape oil paintings. I struggled to feel fulfilled by my work and slowly realized the problem was I felt a lack of deeper purpose for the work. At the time I was working as a nanny for young children. I’ve always loved spending time with kids and started to dream of a way I could combine these two passions. I began studying illustration and playing with new mediums and ways to make art. I discovered that making illustrations gave me the satisfaction and purpose that my fine art paintings lacked. I joined The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and have continued to attend workshops and conferences to hone my skills. I’m so happy to have found this art form that feels meaningful and is deeply satisfying.

I’m completely dedicated to making my living as an illustrator and having the right tools will give me the leg up I need to get there.
