Mufakose is a sprawling high density suburb in Harare, Zimbabwe. It is characterised by cheery neighbourhood banter, speeding commuter omnibus drivers competing for clients and floor polish and broom vendors walking around selling their wares. The occasional ice cream vendor is seen tempting the children in the hot weather, making them run in anticipation to their parents. It is this neighbourhood that saw Diana grow up to be a wife and mother of two years.
Twenty-seven-year-old Diana was born and bred in Mufakose and she knows it like the back of her hand. It is this familiarity with her environment that has made her business easier and made it grow. Diana is into the cross-border business and also sells other small food items like polony (bologna sausage) and eggs, which are popular breakfast items.
Diana belongs to the Hurudza group. Hurudza is a Shona term that means master farmer, referring to someone who has big harvests. They also want to be “hurudzas” who are master harvesters in their lives. They work very hard. The group has three members who are all cross border traders who also sell small food items that give them daily allowances to buy their daily needs. The group has applied for their second loan. They paid back their first loan well without any hindrances. Their businesses have seen a marked improvement showing that they benefited from the loan.
With her second loan, Diana is planning to restock clothing and accessories to sell to her regular clientele. She also wants to buy tubes of polony from SA where they are cheaper as they are a fast-selling commodity during school days.
