Jamila is a 48-year-old married woman living with her husband and five children in Pusuga, a community in Northern Ghana. Jamila is the person seated in the middle with the hand raised among her group mates in the photo. Their group is called Wuni Ni song – Pusuga, which means God will help group of Pusuga. All the members of the group are involved in the business of processing and selling shea butter. They have been in the business for the past 15 years. Jamila and the group process high-premium shea butter and sell it regularly to their many other customers in Ghana. They also process the shea butter on demand to aggregators and exporters to the European and US markets.
Jamila also supplements her income through petty trading. She and her group are therefore requesting a loan of GHS 7,800, having successfully paid a previous loan of GHS 5,400. Jamila will use her portion of the loan to buy some bags of shea nuts for processing into shea butter for sale. Jamila hopes to increase her income so as to support her family in terms of food. She is extremely grateful to her Kiva lenders for their support.
