Legacy giving

There are 2 ways to provide lasting support to Kiva beyond your lifetime:

  1. Leave a portion of your estate as a donation to Kiva via a bequest
  2. Leave a portion of your estate as a revolving loan fund

Learn more about how to set up either of these legacy plans below.

Leave a donation via bequest

Donations to Kiva are vital in helping us work to fulfill our mission. A bequest is a donation that’s transferred after death by will or trust, and can be made in cash, securities, or as a percentage of a donor’s estate. The donor’s estate is reduced by the full fair market value of a charitable gift, thereby potentially reducing the impact of the U.S. federal and state (if applicable) transfer tax on the estate. Because a will is an important legal document, we recommend you get the help of a lawyer, but offer some suggested wording for your bequest on the attached form, which you can share with your advisors.

Leave funds for a revolving loan fund

If you prefer to leave a portion of your estate to lend to borrowers, you can do this using a regular Kiva account. Just instruct the executor of your estate to deposit funds into a revolving loan account (using Kiva’s auto lending tool and selecting loan criteria that you recommend). Please note that deposits into lending accounts are not tax-deductible at the time of deposit; however, a donation of 10% of the amount of each loan will be contributed to Kiva from the account as each loan is made. Please be sure to discuss the tax implications of creating a revolving loan fund with your estate advisor.

Let Kiva know your legacy plans

Documenting your plans solidifies a lifelong relationship that allows you to participate in Kiva’s future. By solidifying your intentions, you are not entering into a legally binding or irrevocable gift agreement. You retain the flexibility to change your plans should your circumstances or priorities change. Please contact us at development@kiva.org to discuss the details of your intentions so Kiva may properly steward the future gift when it is received.
