Kiva conducts regular, ongoing monitoring of all Field Partners, but only posts status updates here in response to relevant, major changes at the partner.

Status update — March 4, 2021

Kiva continues to work with YSBS to collect repayments as per the process outlined in our status update posted on May 24, 2019. See below for more details.

Status update — May 24, 2019

YSBS continues to make partial repayments to Kiva each month, but those have yet to be distributed to lenders. This partner has disputed our foreign exchange loss policy, and therefore hasn't been making payments in full. Right now we're collecting these payments "in trust" until we are certain we have collected everything we can. Funds will then be distributed proportionally to lenders based on the amount they have outstanding.  We appreciate your patience throughout this process.

Status update — August 2, 2017

YSBS continues to make partial repayments to Kiva each month, but those have yet to be distributed to lenders. This partner is currently disputing our foreign exchange loss policy, and therefore hasn't been making payments in full. Right now we're collecting these payments "in trust" while determining the fairest way our system has to disburse repayments to lenders, given the strangeness of this situation. We have plans to visit YSBS later this year and discuss this dispute in person, after which time we should have a better understanding of next steps.

Status update — October 31, 2016

YSBS continues to make repayments on their outstanding balance due to lenders. The organization has long loan terms, so lenders will continue to receive repayments for almost 5 years, but they are committed to repaying Kiva lenders.

Status update — February 2, 2016

Kiva has moved this Field Partner to inactive status, meaning YSBS is no longer fundraising loans on Kiva. When a partner is moved to inactive status, Kiva expects the partner to continue to send repayments owed to Kiva lenders for as long as the partner has an outstanding balance. If and when this partner requests to fundraise again on Kiva, Kiva will first conduct any additional monitoring and due diligence tasks we believe necessary.

Partner Description:

Yayasan Sosial Bina Sejahtera (YSBS) is a non-governmental organization that has worked on poverty reduction, food security, gender issues, education, public health, and climate change in Central Java, Indonesia for over 40 years. Enjoying strong relationships with local and national governments and local Muslim leaders, YSBS now oversees several agencies including:

Education — Running 25 schools including five senior high school-level vocational schools. The vocational schools offer a balance of theoretical and practical training in various programs including light automotive, farming, fisheries, accounting, and sewing, and provide students with job placement services. Many Indonesian students attend vocational senior high schools, instead of general senior high school.

Women’s Self-Help Group — A microfinance program for women called Kelompok Swadaya Wanita (KSW) that serves over 2,000 women. The KSW program is driven by a social mission to empower women and alleviate poverty in rural parts of Indonesia. Financial education and savings are encouraged through KSW, and women are required to attend four training sessions prior to forming groups.

Socio-economic development — Executing infrastructure projects like roads and bridges.

Charity and health — Providing services for the vulnerable including surgeries for prosthetic limbs, cysts and cleft lips, wheelchairs for the disabled, and transgender counseling.

Minomartani — A child sponsorship and nutrition program run in partnership with Child Fund.

YSBS also has a close affiliate, Yayasan Pembina Pendidikan Kemaritiman (YPPK), which runs Akademi Maritim Nusantara, a tertiary institute for maritime education. The academy teaches approximately 600 students across three disciplines: ship engineering, nautical science, and maritime economics.

Kiva funding will be used to supplement and expand several YSBS and YPPK programs.

Kiva lenders have the opportunity to fund zero-interest student loans for poor and low-income students at the maritime academy, and YSBS’ senior high vocational schools. Other Kiva loans can be made to women in the KSW microfinance program.
