Partner Description:

BRAC is a global development organization dedicated to alleviating poverty by empowering the poor to bring about change in their own lives. BRAC’s holistic approach aims to achieve large-scale positive changes through economic and social programs that enable women and men to realize their potential.

BRAC launched in Bangladesh in 1972, and today reaches more than 138 million people throughout Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. It does this through programs that address poverty by providing micro-loans, self-employment and education opportunities, and health, legal and human rights services. BRAC is working toward its vision of a world free from exploitation and discrimination, where young people have the opportunity to realize their potential.

The organization began working outside of Bangladesh in 2002 when it opened operation in Afghanistan. Since then, it has expanded globally to Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Haiti, the United Kingdom and the United States. BRAC is the world’s largest development organization in terms of staff and coverage, employing more than 120,000 people.

BRAC began operating in Pakistan in April 2007, and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan as a company limited in February 2008. BRAC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs to work in the fields of microfinance, health and education.

Today, BRAC Pakistan covers all 4 provinces of Pakistan (Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and 23 districts, operating 96 branch offices and 19 area offices. Right now, the organization is implementing the following major programs:

Microfinance Program: BRAC Pakistan is implementing its credit program in 23 districts across the country through 19 area offices and 96 branch offices. So far, it has disbursed over $51 million to its more than 100,000 members.

Primary and Essential Health Care Program: BRAC Pakistan operates its health program in four districts. It offers health and nutrition education, water and sanitation services, family planning, pregnancy-related care, safe delivery practices, basic curative care for 10 common diseases and immunizations at the community level through community health promoters and program assistants.

Education Program: BRAC Pakistan’s education program run in the Haripur, Charsadda, Swabi and Lasbela districts. So far, 50 pre-primary schools have been completed in Haripur, and 1,454 students have graduated. The organization also runs 5 primary schools in Lasbela.

Targeting the Ultra-Poor Program: BRAC Pakistan implemented this program in 2010 with funds from the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund. The two-year program reached out to 1,500 beneficiaries with interventions like cash stipends, asset transfers, enterprise development training, social development and essential health care services. These beneficiaries received economic, social and health support for a full 2-year cycle.

Small Enterprises Program: BRAC Pakistan has initiated a program targeting small enterprises through 20 of its branches in seven districts, including Lahore.

Agriculture Program: BRAC Pakistan is operating its agriculture program through 45 village organizations and 8 of its branches in three districts of Punjab province.
