People's Forum
India

Partner Description:
People’s Forum is a development organization based in Odisha, India that has been working for the sustainable development of rural regions and communities since 1989. Its objective is to strengthen rural economies with local resources and through programs in mental health, elementary education, human trafficking prevention, income restoration, drought mitigation and health and hygiene awareness.
People’s Forum has been working with women’s self-help groups since 1994. Today, it works with 120,000 rural women through its network of 30 branches spread across Odisha and Chattisgarh. The organization’s microfinance program is called Mission Annapurna, and is based in the belief that women are the backbone of the rural economy, and that, with the right resources, they can power economic recovery.
Mission Annapurna provides microcredit as well as micro-savings and micro-insurance services to women who work in weaving, handicrafts, metalwork, fishing, and more. The majority of loans go to workers in agriculture and allied activities. These women are also encouraged to save at their local banks so that, over time, they can invest their own money to build their businesses.
Mission Annapurna was founded to grow microfinance operations in areas untouched by formal financial systems. But microfinance is only one piece of this solution. Working in 15 districts throughout Odisha, Mission Annapurna also provides financial literacy training, business development services and market access to help clients lift themselves out of poverty and graduate to formal banking systems.
Through Mission Annapurna, People’s Forum has established projects to economically empower marginalized and underserved segments of the population. In particular, it has recently extended funding to leprosy-affected families, transgendered individuals, disabled persons, single mothers, widows, and other vulnerable groups.
The funding provided by Kiva lenders will help change the lives of people in these communities by providing them with cost-efficient financial products, along with training and other support services.
People’s Forum also serves low-income women through the following programs:
Mission Ashra: A rehabilitation home for mentally-ill women who can no longer be cared for by their families. The only institution of its kind in Eastern India, it provides comprehensive medical rehabilitation programs for adults and children, and has reunited 620 women with their families in the last five years.
Mission Ashayen: A program that socially and economically rehabilitates women who have been trafficked as sex workers or forced laborers by providing livelihood training and development services.
Mission Asha: The education arm of People’s Forum, providing elementary education to children whose families cannot afford to send them to school. Mission Asha currently runs two schools, enrolling about 600 underprivileged students.
Kiva funding will also be used to fund larger loans to industrial clusters, building members’ capacity and expanding access to broader, higher-value markets.
For its landmark services in the rescue and rehabilitation of hundreds of mentally disabed women, and for its exemplary work with women in distress, People's Forum received the eighth Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh award presented by India President Pranab Mukherjee.
