Status Update: July 23, 2010

Kiva has received a full repayment for BRAC Tanzania’s outstanding balance of $441,196.10.

These funds have been immediately applied to corresponding lender accounts, and full repayment on all applicable loans has been made. Kiva has changed the status of these loans from "Defaulted" to "Paid Back".

Because of the unique regulatory context in Tanzania, BRAC Tanzania has opted not to re-open its relationship with Kiva. We understand that BRAC Tanzania has access to other sources of capital, so we believe borrowers should be minimally affected.

Kiva has been proud to support the excellent work that BRAC is doing to expand access to financial services in Tanzania. Over the lifetime of our partnership, Kiva lenders have raised $1,392,625 to support Tanzanian entrepreneurs. Of this amount, 99.69% was paid back.

We would like to thank the many Kiva lenders who made this possible, as well as BRAC Tanzania and BRAC itself. Kiva continues to proudly work with BRAC across the world, in Sri Lanka, Uganda, and South Sudan. We are excited to continue to offer lenders the opportunity to lend to other BRAC borrowers around the world.

Status Update: May 3, 2010

Kiva and BRAC Tanzania have been working for a number of months to get repayments to Kiva lenders cleared through the Bank of Tanzania. Though we continue to work get outstanding repayments cleared and repaid to Kiva lenders, we have decided to default all delinquent loans facilitated by BRAC Tanzania.

Kiva's policy is to default loans if we deem that either collection of the loan funds is unlikely, or if 180 days since the last repayment have passed, subject to case by case differences. Though we believe that BRAC Tanzania and Kiva will obtain the necessary clearance from the Bank of Tanzania to remit repayments to Kiva lenders, it has been well over 180 days since the last repayment was made to Kiva lenders and timing of any eventual clearance from the Bank of Tanzania is uncertain.

In the event that BRAC Tanzania repayments are cleared, Kiva will deposit those repayments to contributing lenders as Kiva Credit. If all funds are repaid to Kiva lenders, we will un-default these loans (the loan status will be changed from "Defaulted" to "Paid Back").

Status Update: February 1, 2010

Kiva is continuing to work with BRAC Tanzania to remit funds, specifically engaging the Bank of Tanzania on important matters. However, this process remains ongoing and we appreciate your patience as we work through the next steps.

Status Update: December 2, 2009

Kiva continues to work with BRAC Tanzania on allowing funds transfer back to the US and Kiva lenders. Unfortunately, at this time there is not significant additional updates that can be shared regarding progress.

Status Update, July 7, 2009:

BRAC Tanzania’s delinquency rate is higher than normal as a result of difficulties moving funds from Tanzania. The organization is working with the Central Bank of Tanzania to sort out this issue and is providing regular updates to Kiva on its progress. Kiva will be sure to update this page as we learn more, and all funds received from BRAC Tanzania will be applied to delinquent loans upon receipt.

Original Description
BRAC is guided by the vision to aspire and work towards a just, enlightened, healthy and democratic society free from hunger, poverty, environmental degradation and all forms of exploitation based on age, sex, religion and ethnicity. The vision is explicitly reflected in the mission statement, which is to strive to bring about positive changes in the quality of life of the poor wherever it works.
>
BRAC, a development organization began its operation in a remote, rural area in Bangladesh as a small-scale relief and rehabilitation project in 1972 to help the returning refugees to resettle and overcome the devastation and trauma of the liberation war. Soon, BRAC concentrated on developing models and scaling them up to help the poor to improve various dimensions of their lives and livelihoods. Today, BRAC has emerged as an independent, virtually self-financed paradigm in sustainable human development. It is one of the largest Southern development organizations working with the twin objectives of poverty alleviation and empowerment of the poor women. Diagnosing poverty in human terms and recognizing its multifaceted nature, BRAC approaches poverty alleviation with a holistic approach.
