Janet's story

Janet A. is 65 years old. She is widowed and has seven children, one female and six males. She says she lost her husband very long ago and decided not to marry again. She says all her children are married and living independently. She lives with some of her grandchildren in a rented apartment in a small farming community called Nkwateng in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The major occupation of the dwellers, the men in particular, is farming. Most of the women, however, are into trading activities and palm oil production.
Janet says she been farming ever since she was young. She cultivates both food crops and cash crops such as cocoa, palm nuts, plantain, etc. She sells her farm produce, the food crops, to retailers and food vendors in her community. Janet says she wants a loan to procure agro-chemicals such as fertilizers, insecticides, etc. to be able to practice modern farming practices. She aspires to give her grandchildren the support they need for their education.
