A loan helped a member to buy fabrics, threads and needles for her embroidery business.

Gedeon Group's story

The community of Los Altos is in Guatemala’s second largest city, Quetzaltenango which is in the Western Highlands. It is the home of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Gedeon” that has nine very dedicated and hardworking members whose aspirations are to make their lives better.

Cecilia is one of “Gedeon’s” members. She is 29 years old, married and has two children who are 5 and 1 year old. Her business is as a seamstress and embroiderer. She makes exquisite quilts, drapes and “huipiles” the traditional blouses worn by Maya women. This is the time of year, because of various holidays and end of the year celebrations, that she needs to augment her inventory due to increased customer demands. Cecilia is asking for a loan to buy fabrics, threads and needles because these are the most important items for making her creations and to sustain the high quality she is known for. She sells, predominantly, in her local community.

The Trust Bank women of “Gedeon” are very happy that, besides receiving micro-loans, they also have the opportunity to learn about important topics that will help them on a daily basis in their lives and in their businesses. They say that it is helpful to learn about good health for themselves and their families. They also are very grateful for the lessons in business administration, sound investing, creating savings and customer service. The women look forward to the monthly meetings where the Friendship Bridge Facilitator helps them to learn through role playing, drawings and photos. This is all part of the winning combination of the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of micro loans and education. The women of “Gedeon” send their sincere gratitude to Friendship Bridge and the KIVA investors for helping them to develop personally, as well as their businesses. Thank you!!!
