A loan helped to purchase seeds, fertilizers and other necessary farm supplies for the cultivation of chilies.

Jhunu's story

Jhunu lives in a small village of Alipurduar in West Bengal. She is 36 years old, married and a mother of two children (one son and one daughter). She got education up to grade 5 and could not proceed further due to her parent's poor economic condition. Her children are in grade 4 and grade 1 in local village school. Jhunu wants to provide them with a good education.

Jhunu’s husband, Shyamal, is engaged with a vegetable vending business. Jhunu is involved with farming; they have a small piece of land where she grows different vegetables in different seasons with the assistance of her husband. She and her husband give their hard toil to grow vegetables and earn sufficient profit, to give their family financial sustenance. Her husband sells the vegetables after harvesting in the market and in their neighborhood. Sometimes he also buys vegetables from the wholesale market to sell.

As Jhunu has been in agribusiness for such a long time, it has given her the skills and knowledge necessary to attend her crops. Now Jhunu wants to cultivate chilies, which have a great demand in the market.

So Jhunu has taken a loan from Kiva’s partner BJS to expand her agribusiness. She plans to purchase seeds of chilies, fertilizers and other farm supplies to cultivate chillies. She is hopeful that this business will give a quality life to her family, and that she will save some money for her children's future.

She is obliged to both Kiva and BJS.
